Building a Home Recovery Setup: Sauna, Cold Plunge and Red Light

You don't need everything at once. Here's how athletes typically build a home recovery setup in stages.

Stage 1: Start with one

Pick the routine you'll actually use most. Cold plunge for post-run or post-lift recovery, sauna for relaxation and heat sessions, or a red light device if space and budget are tight.

On a tight budget? Our budget recovery gear guide shows how to start for a few hundred dollars.

Stage 2: Add contrast

Pairing a sauna and a cold plunge lets you alternate hot and cold, often called contrast therapy. Place them close together, ideally near a shower.

Have backyard space? An outdoor sauna cabin makes a strong centerpiece. RecoSauna's square cabins come in Nordic pine or Thermowood and ship free to the US (heater sold separately).

Stage 3: Round it out

Red light panels or wraps are compact and can mount on a wall near your other gear.

Best value panel: the BestQool BQ60 combines 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared light and costs well under a dollar a month to run.
