The Home Recovery Buying Checklist

Saunas, cold plunges and red light devices cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. Run through these 12 checks before you buy and you'll avoid the most common (and expensive) mistakes.

Space & install

  1. Measure the spot and the path to it.Floor area, ceiling height, and every doorway, gate and stair the delivery has to pass through.
  2. Plan the base.Outdoor saunas and plunges need a level, well-drained base such as a gravel pad, pavers or a slab. Check the filled weight of a plunge before putting it on a deck.
  3. Check your power. Many indoor infrared saunas plug into a standard 120V outlet. Larger traditional heaters usually need a dedicated 240V circuit from an electrician.
  4. Wood stove? Plan the chimney.Wood-burning sauna stoves need a chimney and safe clearances, and some towns regulate them.
  5. Check local rules. Some areas require permits for outdoor structures or new electrical circuits. A quick call to your city saves headaches.

True cost

  1. Is the heater or chiller included? Some outdoor saunas list the cabin price only. Make sure your quote includes the heater.
  2. Get the delivered price in dollars. Some brands list prices in euros including European tax. Ask for a written US quote.
  3. Budget for running costs.Electricity for heaters and chillers, filters and sanitizer for plunges, and occasional replacement parts.

Quality & support

  1. Read the warranty, not just the length.Look at what's covered (heater, chiller, structure) and for how long. Coverage varies a lot between brands.
  2. Check the return policy.Big items can be costly to send back. Know the window and who pays shipping.
  3. Cold plunge: chiller and sanitation.Hot climates and frequent use need stronger cooling. Look for filtration plus UV or ozone so you're not constantly draining it.
  4. Red light: sweatproof vs. waterproof. They're not the same. If you'll use it wet, look for an IP67-type rating.
